1. Don’t hire a professional. They can’t do ANYTHING that you can’t do yourself. All three bureaus have websites. When you downloaded your reports you should be able to find tabs or buttons that say ‘disputes” or “dispute this” or whatever. If you can’t, google each one separately (dispute transunion, dispute Equifax, etc) Dispute every single derogatory item—late pays, collections, charge offs, everything. Technically you’re only supposed to dispute wrong items, but if you’re talking about a two year old collection you paid off, there’s a good chance the company wont respond. I know people who have had around half their stuff removed even though it was correct because companies didn’t respond. Once you’ve disputed everything it will take 30 days to validate, update or remove things. After that, work on lowering your credit cards to below 50% of their limit—this can make a huge impact. Keep your longest standing accounts open and avoid taking out new credit.
